STATEMENT

My work addresses issues of time and place. The shapes and colors of the surrounding environment inform my work; the history and mythology of the place appear as patterns, marks and symbols. Ultimately, it is the internal mappings of the experience of place that are expressed in my paintings.

I use acrylic paint, charcoal, collage, graphite, oil pastel, tape, and transfers. The application of these materials is one of layering and mark making. I build with shapes, cover them up, scrape parts away. Sometimes small fragments are left to suggest something beneath, something of the past. The paintings are composites of shape and line, their surfaces reveal a history of both the physical activity and the thought process that occur in creating the work.
